As mulheres começaram a dançar no ballet em 1681 e 20 anos depois o rei Luís XIV de França ordenou a fundação do Ballet Ópera de Paris. Naquela época as mulheres dançavam ballet com sapatos de salto. Em Meados do século 18, a bailarina Marie Camargo do Ballet Ópera de Paris foi a primeira a vestir um sapato sem salto, permitindo-lhe realizar movimentos que teriam sido difíceis, senão impossíveis com o sistema convencional de sapatos da época. Após a Revolução Francesa os saltos foram completamente eliminados do ballet. Esses antecessores da sapatilha de ponta moderna envolviam os pés por tiras que terminavam em pregas sob os dedos, para que os bailarinos pudessem saltar, executar giros e esticarem seus pés.
