No ano de 1904, os holandeses ainda controlavam a porção norte do território de Bali, mas desejavam dominar toda a ilha. Com esse objectivo e sob vários pretextos, eles promoveram, no mesmo ano, um massacre. Tentaram, em vários momentos, render os nativos com o uso de armas de fogo. Porém, os balineses resistiram e enfrentaram os colonizadores com adagas. No final desta luta desigual foram aproximadamente 4 mil pessoas assassinadas.
